Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cookies

** Newsflash **  – eating these intensely chocolatey cookies may cause feelings of euphoria.

Or help soothe a broken heart.

I made them a few days after Sasha’s passing – I finished packing up her things and had David tuck them away safely in the garage. I didn’t want the other dogs to take over her stuff – is that weird? I mean, I know she’s gone but her things were still ……  hers. And someday, I will get another dog and pass on the coveted pink bed and pink Christmas sweater.

So after I had another good cry, I made cookies. And they helped. See, chocolate IS good for you!

Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cookies - adapted from Ina Garten

1 stick (4 oz)  unsalted butter, softened
1/2 cup light brown sugar, packed
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 large egg
1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa
1 cup all purpose flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
¼ tsp kosher salt
1 1/2 cups chocolate chips

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Beat the butter and both sugars together until light and fluffy in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Add the vanilla, then the eggs, 1 at a time, and mix well. Add the cocoa and mix again. Sift together the flour, baking soda, and salt and add to the chocolate with the mixer on low speed until just combined. Stir in the chocolate chips.

Drop the dough on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, using a 1 3/4-inch ice cream scoop or a rounded tablespoon. Dampen your hands and flatten the dough slightly. Bake for exactly 15 minutes (the cookies will seem underdone). Remove from the oven and let cool slightly on the pan, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Yield – about 12 cookies

  1. Oh my goodness…this post couldn’t have been more timely. I so need some of these today. Thanks for stopping by and commenting on my sweet Allie cat. I plan to get another cat and totally understand not letting the new one have her toys.

  2. I’m feeling a little lackluster these days. It’s the illness of one of my family members and nightmares that coincide with that. I may just make these in the next few days.:) Thanks, Megan. And I hope your heart continues to mend.:)

  3. I understand putting Sasha’s stuff away. I have a bag in the laundry room.. for that same reason.
So glad you were soothed by the healing powers of chocolate. It gets easier. A little.

  4. These look like the type of cookies that will cure most anything!!

  5. Chocolate makes everything a little better, doesn’t it?

  6. These look incredible and I’m sure they taste as good as they look being an Ina recipe. It is definitely not weird that you packed up Sasha’s stuff. Sometimes it’s better to just put things aside and deal with them later (if at all).

  7. These look quite comforting! It’s hard to pack everything up though, isn’t it?

  8. This is my favorite type of cookie! Chocolate is pretty good at comforting :)

  9. These look delicious.

I saved the old, ratty wicker dog bed after our dog died since he loved to sleep in it. I still have it years later in our garage, and I couldn’t part with it.

  10. Oh honey :( Yes chocolate is definitely therapeutic. They look yummy!

  11. You really just have to eat what ever you can manage and what might make you feel better. when you’re going through a bad time. Chocolate sounds perfect. It doesn’t seem strange at all to pack away Sasha’s things. I feel like I might have made these at some point.

  12. Chocolate is definitely one of the best medicines out there. Laughter things it is the best, but it is really just a runner up. These look delicious! Can’t go wrong with any recipe that has two chocolates in the name.

Good for you for being strong. You will get through this…even if it will take time.

  13. So sorry about your little pup. Chocolate can almost make you feel better…and I’ve made these cookies before, so I know they’re up for the job. Yum.

  14. These cookies look yummy! I’m so glad they helped ease the sadness you were feeling. Chocolate does that for me too!

  15. This is a bittersweet (no pun intended) post. I don’t think it’s weird at all to want to keep and set aside your doggie’s things. I would do the same thing. So sorry again for your loss…probably good to continue distracting yourself with other (edible) things.

  16. I’m thinking I need to make these. They look delicious!
